Task 1- Generating Ideas

Task 1- Generating Ideas
Learning outcome (U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief. (P1&M1)

I have been given a client brief that has asked me to create a pitch of ideas that i have about producing a new online and print based music magazine for the North London area, as there is a vibrant music scene developing in the area and people need to know about it. I have been asked to develop a proposal and create sample materials for my magazine ideas and to plan and deliver a pitch. I will need to understand the type of demographic and differed audiences in the North London area so i come up with the best possible type of magazine to suit different audiences specific needs. I will need to identify the type of people that live in North London such as youth, families and ABC1 adults so i can target them using different conventions on the magazine that will accommodate them.

Every magazine must follow certain codes and conventions so that they are distinguished and recognised from other magazines. These codes and conventions are:

  • A Masthead
  • A Main Image
  • A skyline
  • A strapline
  • A subheading
  •  A colour Scheme
  • A barcode
  • A graphic feature
  • A Date/website
  • Issue Date
  • Publisher
  • A Pug
  • Cover lines
  • Bylines
My initial thoughts for possible genre and type of magazine i am going to create after interpreting the client brief is that i want to create something that is new and fresh, that is up and coming and unique and relates to a grossing genre in the North London area. I want to create a magazine that has a different unique selling point to other magazines that might be of a similar genre so that my magazine stands out in a crowd.

At first thought i wanted to create a music magazine for North London that isn't genre specific so that it can relate to all types of music that people love and won't separate or segment people from reading my magazine. Also, the North London music scene is current and a non genre specific magazine will express the vibrancy of the scene and the different cultures lived by people in the area.

Another idea i had was to create a mainstream pop music magazine surrounding the North London area because it is there is a populated mainstream market that has a huge audience following so i thought if i created a mainstream music magazine about pop music in North London it would gain a lot of attention.

My final idea was to create a niche Grime music magazine about the up and coming genre of music in the area where a lot of grime artists are from. I felt that targeting a niche audience would help my magazine distinguish itself on the market and be different to all the other magazines of the same type. Grime music is rapidly progressing in recent times and is becoming more and more popular amongst there demographics, so creating a magazine all about a new up and coming type of music is the perfect way to express a new and up and coming area as Grime music is performed in venues in North London.

Strengths of creating a non genre specific magazine:

  • Widest possible range of audience
  • More possibilities for advertising
  • Wider range of places magazine can be sold
  • Talk about more than one genre
Weaknesses of creating a non genre specific magazine:
  • Loads of genres at once could confuse the readers
  • Could be more expensive getting interviews with different types of artists
  • Advertising could be expensive
  • Could be hard getting the magazine type approved with no specific genre included
Strengths of creating a mainstream pop music magazine:
  • Large target audience
  • More money from advertising
  • Bigger budget
  • More places to sell the magazine such as a supermarket may not want to sell a niche magazine
Weaknesses of creating a mainstream pop music magazine:

  • Mainstream market is already overpopulated
  • Loads of competition
  • Expensive to advertise
  • Harder to brand because it may not have a specific or unique identity
Strengths of creating a niche Grime music magazine:
  • Target a specific demographic
  • Easier to focus on a certain area
  • Less competitive than a mainstream market
  • Loyal readership
  • Clear brand and identity because it's about one particular thing
Weaknesses of creating a niche Grime music magazine:
  • Not a wide range of target audience
  • Less places to sell the product
  • Less money for advertising

To conclude i believe that the best idea is to create a niche grime music magazine because it is the best way to demonstrate and display the vibrancy of the current music scene growing in North London because Grime music itself is a growing music industry. It is easier to target a specific demographic rather than a mainstream audience because i can identify the target audiences individual and unique needs so i can focus and tailor the content on things they like. Another reason why i think it is the best idea is because i can alter the communication and speech in the magazine to suit the way people articulate in the North London area so they relate to it more. Also, it is easier for niche magazine to focus on a certain area because it will have a broader audience so it is best to target a certain area and expand from there. In addition, the niche market is less competitive that a mainstream market because it is less populated and by having a unique selling point of the North London area it allows for the magazine to not have many competitors. Penultimately, Grime is a niche music genre and by having a niche magazine, people who like the genre of music will stay loyal. Lastly, A niche magazines brand and identity is clearer and easier to distinguish than a mainstream or non genre specific magazine because it has one focus and is about one particular thing.
